The Taco Factory

There are three things you can’t leave Mexico without: A suntan, a shot glass souvenir, and an experience at The Taco Factory. Visiting San Felipe without visiting The Taco Factory is like visiting Paris and not seeing the Eifel Tower. This outdoor, spacious restaurant has an unobstructed view of The Sea of Cortez, and is the perfect place for lunch or dinner on a beautiful, sunny day in San Felipe.

 Location

The Taco Factory is located at #101 on the Malecon (or boardwalk) along the crystal clear waters of The Sea of Cortez. The Malecon is the place to be in San Felipe for visitors looking for good food, good music and a good time. The Taco Factory is a casual and family friendly restaurant that overlooks the sea, directly across from a more upscale but similar restaurant called Baja Mar. If it’s sea breezes and cold drinks you’re looking for, head to The Taco Factory. This is a people-watching mecca, as the openness of the restaurant allows you an unobstructed view of the sea, the people and the hustle and bustle of San Felipe. You can sit back and watch fisherman bring in their boats and their catch of the day, or if you look close enough, you may see a dolphin jump high out of the water. The Taco Factory has great food, strong drinks and amazing customer service, but it is missing something. Something most other restaurants consider an important feature: Walls. The Taco Factory does not have walls to close you in or block the view of the Malecon or of the gorgeous sea, and we think this is a brilliant idea. The entire dining area is shaded, and no matter where you are sitting, you’re a stone’s throw from the ocean. You’re in Mexico; you don’t want to be cooped up in a small dining room when you have that view to take in! The Taco Factory does ocean side dining right.  This restaurant is the closest seat you can get to the main stage on the boardwalk, so when events or performances are going on, The Taco Factory is a great place to be!

The Food

Many people like to look at the menu before they enter a restaurant, and that is a great idea as long as you can read the menu. If your Spanish is a little rusty, never fear. The menu lists all of the food in both Spanish and English. Whew! Crisis avoided!

When it comes to appetizers, remember these three words: Stuffed Shrimp Peppers. This appetizer is a favorite amongst customers here, and once you take a bite, you will understand why. The only thing better than this appetizer is this appetizer with a margarita. The bartenders sure do know what they are doing, and these gorgeous and tasty drinks go down so smoothly. Try something new and order a cucumber or mango margarita. A common trend amongst restaurants along the Malecon is lunch and dinner meal portions that practically fall off the plate. You will either leave with your pants unbuttoned or a doggie bag, there is so much food! After your appetizer and a Margarita (or two) you should order the beef and shrimp tacos, you are at The Taco Factory after all. If it is something spicy you’re looking for, check out the shrimp enchiladas! Feeling a little bold? Order the stingray taco! It’s one of the most popular tacos ordered.  The salsa and guacamole are fresh and delicious, and comes in big potions for the whole table to share. One of their new specialties is the King Burrito Dish: a large tortilla stuffed with your choice of meat or seafood, and lathered in tomato sauce and melted cheese. Good luck finishing the whole thing! It’s easy to spend the whole afternoon here, ordering a drink, people watching, ordering an appetizer or two, enjoying the view of the water and before you know it the sun is setting over the Sea of Cortez and the San Felipe nightlife begins.

The full bar opens up a world of opportunities for a great time in San Felipe. Although their American beer selection is limited, you’re in Mexico, drink as they do! Order a XX Amber or Bohemia, you won’t be sorry. If you’re visiting The Taco Factory as the sun goes down, you should have a Cosmo or a glass of Sangria. It just makes sense to sip something fruity as the sun sets in one of the most beautiful towns south of the border.  Happy Hour is between 10am and 1pm, so stop by for discounts on beer and margaritas! Then head home for a quick siesta and come back for dinner.

The Service

If you find yourself staring at the Taco Factory’s service staff and thinking “Are the people who are bringing me drinks on vacation too? Because they are way too happy and in such a good mood, they CAN’T be working,“ you’re not alone. Many visitors are pleasantly surprised by the positive and energetic attitude each server brings to the table (literally!) You won’t find a lazy, bored or unenthusiastic server here, that’s for sure.  The service is quick, professional and always very friendly. The managers and owners are frequently making the rounds of the dining room to make sure everything is as you expected, and to make sure your glasses don’t get empty and that you are having a great time. Many of the servers have been here for years, and its obvious they love what they do by the way they take care of their customers from the moment they walk in until they reluctantly have to leave at closing time.

Prices

Speaking of closing time, when the friendly servers finally have to usher you out and it is time to pay the bill, you may be surprised. Surprised that tacos this good, service this friendly and margaritas this tasty only cost this much?!  With tacos starting at $1.00 and happy hour specials that will amaze you, this is an affordable place to spend an afternoon in San Felipe.  With food made from the freshest ingredients, a dining room with beautiful views and margaritas that will knock your socks off, The Taco Factory will surely turn into your favorite spot on the Malecon.
