San Felipe knows the value of pets to their owners, and the veterinarian is an important part of that care. Supplies, treatment for both wounds and illnesses, grooming, and even surgery are available in town.
Competent, professional veterinarians are a mainstay in the life and world of a pet owner, and, though San Felipe may be a small town, it caters to the needs of pets for both tourists and residents. Nothing can be more alarming for a pet owner than having their four-legged friend and family member become sick or injured. The comfort and delight that pets accord their owners cannot be overstated, and these worthy animals deserve the best care no matter where they may be living at any given time.
Pets Veterinaria (Veterinarian) is a full-service pet shop, including everything you may need or want for your pet including a variety of both veterinarian services and supplies. Pets Veterinaria handles services and supplies for both large and small animals, from house pet to ranch livestock.
This sign, in Spanish, tells you that Pets Veterinaria offers flea and tick remedies and prevention (insecticidas), supplies and accessories (accesorios), and food (alimentos). This is the sign that announces to you that you are nearly at your destination -- it can be seen from several blocks away in any direction.
The front of the combination store and office gives even more information as to what is available inside. As you can see from the avatars on the front of the shop, a full range of animals are treated here, from the smallest to the largest. For those pet owners who live in San Felipe year-round, vaccinations are given, along with a ‘passport’ to record the date of the shots and a reminder for when your pet is due for his or her next shot. This ‘passport’ is important to maintain if you plan to take your pet across the border into the U.S. Only properly vaccinated animals are allowed to enter at any of the border crossings. Humans are not the only ones who need a passport to cross the border! With proper documentation, there is no problem to be had in bringing your pet back into the States. Private parking for clients is located at the front of the shop, making sure that your car is within close range for transferring your animal.
The employees here are warm and welcoming, eager to help you with what you’re looking for, and knowledgeable in what may be best for your pet’s needs. As you can see, not only are serious supplies available, but a bit of the whimsy as well. Dress your pet up, Mexican style!
The shop itself is airy and clean, and holds a tremendous amount of supplies in every nook and cranny. The walls are full of accessories for the smallest to the largest pet. Collars, leashes, and harnesses are in plain view in their various sizes and colors. Fleas and ticks can be a huge nuisance, especially during the summer months. Because the weather never gets cold enough to kill them during the winter, they can be bothersome to pets all year. There are plenty of flea and tick killing and prevention medicines available here, no matter when you have need of them. Various small items, such as pet tags are also available at the counter in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. Business is conducted on a cash-only basis, but either Mexican or American money is welcome.
Varieties of foods are available, both the familiar and the not-so-familiar. All are name brands, no matter what country they come from.
Any reliable pet store will have foods that cater to the needs of both the young and older pet, and Pets Veterinaria is no exception. Different pets have differing needs, according to not only their age but their lifestyles, and you’ll find those needs well taken care of here.
Even the more exotic-seeming pets are not forgotten.
Pet food in bulk is available in a do-it-yourself style, where you can help yourself to as little or as much as you want, according to the needs of you and your pet. Other supplies are within reach so that you can help yourself as well.
In its most charmingly Mexican way, seed packets for the home gardener are always available here. Gardening can be a challenge, especially if you’re from the northern latitudes. Because the seasons and temperatures are so different in San Felipe from northern climes, planting and harvesting times are also often different from what you may be used to. You may, however, discover that many plants normally grown indoors up north are very happy being outside in the shade here. Landscaping can take on a new perspective. Have fun, experiment, enjoy!
Keeping your pets cool and groomed is not overlooked, either.
Magdalena Bernal is the licensed veterinarian at Pets Veterinaria. Having taken several of my own pets to her in the past, I can attest to her knowledge and professionalism. She is very caring about the condition of animals, no matter what species. She recently donated a large iguana to El Bosque (The Forest) in Mexicali, a park that welcomes families to enjoy its own brand of outdoors not otherwise found in the Mexican desert.
Magdalena is available for emergencies when she is in town. Unfortunately, she is sometimes in Mexicali or elsewhere, but these are the only times she won’t respond to an urgent call in the case of pet distress. In an emergency, call Magdalena on her cell phone, listed below.
Pets Veterinaria is open Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. And again from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. Saturdays it’s open from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Year ‘round.
