Yes, I met some people who came from far away to San Felipe exclusively to fish. Mostly part of those people rent a panga for those of you who don’t know what that is, it’s an average of 20 ft long open boat with a local crew to take them to the right places in the sea of Cortez in front of San Felipe to get you the best fishing experience.
Usually you can find a fisherman on the shore by the sea wall in town, ready to make a deal and take you the next day into the perfect fishing place for the very reasonable price of $240.00 USD for a party of 6 persons, that’s only $ 40.00 USD each.
Why the next day? Why not the same day? You might ask,
Well according to my good old friend and very experienced fisherman Pio, the best time to start it’s during the morning some time around 6:00 am to 7:00 am.
The fishing trip could last up to 7 hours and you will barely notice the hours passing and in the end you’ll realize those hours just happened to fly while you’re having all that fun.
They can take you to the Consag Island, a rock that you can see from San Felipe and its located only 20 nautical miles away or around 20 minutes, or the artificial fishing reefs.
Some of the species that you might catch are:
Corvina, tiger fish, grouper, halibut, macro, among other delicious species.
You can catch something between 30 to 40 fish in that period of time. That’s why a few fisherman might offer “no fish, no pay” and at the end of the trip they’ll earn a tip by helping you on cleaning all the fish so it will be ready to cook it your way or even take some home with you.
I saw the case of a airplane pilot who came by himself a day ahead of some over 20 off road motorcycle riders, and he went with pio´s. he got charged only $100.00 USD for a single customer fishing trip. They provided everything he needed (tackle, bait, full equipment …) the only thing he took with him it was a medium size ice chest with beer. And guess what; he brought it back full of fresh fish fillet. And he asked the hotel restaurant to cook it for his friends to dinner. Total success.
Remember San Felipe is waiting for you, and the fish are wondering if you will dare to try to get them…
